What is the sciatic notch?

The sciatic notch is a passage in the pelvis through which the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the human body, passes from the lower back down into the leg. This notch is formed by two bones of the pelvis - the ischium and the ilium. The sciatic notch is wider in females than in males, which is why women are more prone to developing sciatica, a condition caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. Pressure on the sciatic nerve can lead to pain, numbness, and tingling sensations in the lower back, buttocks, and legs. Certain exercises and stretches can help relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve and reduce symptoms of sciatica.
